Ogden Senior Mustangs

About the Program

The Ogden Senior Mustangs Hockey League is a program designed to help adults develop their hockey skills.

The program is sanctioned by the Utah Amateur Hockey Association (UAHA), a USA Hockey affiliate, and operates under the administration of the Ogden Jr Mustangs. All participants must have a valid USA Hockey membership to ensure insurance coverage and alignment with national hockey standards. The program is entirely volunteer-driven, with dedicated ambassadors, captains, and a program director fostering a positive experience for all participants.

Program Philosophy

  • Focus on Growth: This is a developmental program aimed at improving hockey skills for beginners through intermediate players.
  • Team Culture: We celebrate all contributions, from great saves to defensive plays. Respect and camaraderie are at the core of our program.
  • Inclusivity: Everyone is welcome, regardless of background, and expected to extend the same acceptance to others. Hockey is for everyone.

Skill Levels

The program is designed for new or returning adult players. If you just left a pro team, college team, AAA high school team another league may be better suited.

We group players into three skill levels:

  • Novice
  • Bronze
  • Silver

Please refer to the "Skill Levels" tab to see a detailed description of each level.

Goalie Opportunities: Goalies skate for free but must register in advance. Goalies who wish to skate out must register and pay as skaters.

Schedule

Our Yearly Seasons:
The program offers three seasons each year, providing consistent opportunities to play and develop skills:

  • Fall (September–December): Four weekly ice sessions, split across the levels
  • Winter/Spring (January–May): Four weekly ice sessions, split across the levels
  • Summer (June–August): A condensed schedule with two weekly ice sessions.

Weekly Ice Sessions:
Within each season, players register for specific weekly ice sessions based on their skill level:

  • Novice: Sundays 9:45am - 11:00am.
  • Novice/Bronze: Mondays 8:45 pm - 10:00 pm
  • Bronze: Saturdays 4:30pm - 5:45pm
  • Silver: Wednesdays 9:45pm - 10:45pm

It is possible to register for more than one, however, ask the program director about which days would be best suited for you.

On-Ice Format

  • Scrimmage-Based Play: All sessions are scrimmage-style with random "light" and "dark" teams assigned weekly. Scores are not kept, except during special events or tournaments.
  • No Mixing Sessions: Players may only participate in the sessions they are registered for.

Rules and Expectations

  • Code of Conduct: Respect for teammates, captains, and referees is mandatory. Follow USA Hockey rules and uphold the program’s culture of sportsmanship.
  • No Unauthorized Participation: Only registered players may participate in sessions. Violating this rule will result in removal from future ice times.
  • Mandatory Equipment: All players must wear full hockey gear, including a helmet with a full face shield, gloves, pads, and light and dark jerseys (no gray).
  • Skating Skills: Players must be able to skate safely, stop, and control their movement. Stick & Puck sessions at the Weber County Ice Sheet are recommended for new players to get comfortable in their gear.

Leadership and Administration

  • Sanctioning: The program is sanctioned by the Utah Amateur Hockey Association (UAHA), a USA Hockey affiliate, and is run under the administration of the Ogden Jr Mustangs.

    • Damian Gulian
    • Tony Pett
    • Dennis Balay

  • Tournament Coordinator: David "Lucky" Good manages tournament play and helps with local and internal tournaments.

Novice Division (Beginner)

The Novice Division is for beginner, adult players, 18+ years of age or those with 1-5 years of entry level playing experience as an adult. This is comparable to a traditional D level adult league. The focus is on developing foundational skills in a supportive, scrimmage-based format. This level emphasizes:

  • Sportsmanship: Understanding the culture of hockey, supporting teammates, and respecting opponents.
  • Basic Stickhandling: Learning to control the puck and execute simple passes.
  • Skating Fundamentals:
    • Forward skating with control.
    • Stopping on both sides using two feet.
    • Backward skating and transitioning smoothly between forward and backward skating.
  • Shooting & Lifting the Puck: Developing proper shooting techniques, including how to lift the puck.
  • Gameplay Basics: Understanding offsides, positioning, and making simple plays during scrimmages.

This level provides a welcoming environment for players to build confidence, learn hockey etiquette, and develop a strong foundation for further skill progression.

Bronze Division (Advanced Beginner)

The Bronze Division is for adults who are entering into intermediate level of play. They typically have 1-3 years of experience, possibly played some youth hockey. Similar to a "C" level of hockey. It introduces more structured gameplay and strategic elements while maintaining a focus on scrimmage-based learning. Players in this division are expected to be proficient (but not advanced) in Novice-level skills and work on:

  • Face-Offs: Basic techniques for puck drops and understanding their role in gameplay.
  • Power Plays & Penalty Kills: Learning how to adjust play styles during special team situations.
  • Tournaments: Gaining experience in a competitive but supportive environment during program-hosted tournaments.
  • Refining Fundamentals:
    • Executing clean passes and catches.
    • Improving shooting accuracy.
    • Skating with speed while maintaining control.

Bronze is ideal for players who are advanced beginners but not yet ready for the pace and complexity of higher-level leagues.

Silver Division (Intermediate)

This ice session is for upper intermediate players with several years experience as a recreational adult player. This is comparable to traditional B level adult leagues. The players are confident in their abilities and looking to refine their skills in a faster-paced environment. Players in this division build on Novice and Bronze-level skills while focusing on:

  • Positioning & Line Changes: Understanding and executing positional play, including rotations and line changes.
  • Advanced Team Dynamics: Playing with awareness of team strategies and contributing effectively to team success.
  • Skill Development:
    • Quick transitions between offensive and defensive play.
    • Accurate and controlled puck handling in faster-paced scrimmages.
    • Advanced shooting techniques and situational awareness.
  • Physical Fitness: Adapting to the increased pace and physical demands of this level.

While Silver is a step up in skill and pace, it remains focused on learning, personal growth, and fostering a supportive hockey culture.

Skills and Drills (Not currently on schedule)

This format is dedicated solely to improving specific hockey skills without the pressure of scrimmages. It is suitable for players at any level who want to refine their abilities or develop new ones. Key features include:

  • Targeted Skill Development: Sessions focus on individual skills such as skating, shooting, and passing.
  • Fundamental Refinement: Perfecting techniques like stopping, lifting the puck, and backchecking.
  • Learning in a Controlled Environment: Drills are conducted at varying paces to match individual skill levels and comfort zones.

Skills and Drills sessions are ideal for those looking to improve outside of game settings or for players transitioning to a higher level.

FAQs

1. What is the Ogden Senior Mustangs Hockey Program?

The Ogden Senior Mustangs Hockey Program is an adult developmental hockey program run under the Ogden Jr Mustangs and sanctioned by the Utah Amateur Hockey Association (UAHA), a USA Hockey affiliate. The program focuses on creating a fun, inclusive environment for adults to learn and develop hockey skills, primarily catering to players from beginner to C-level ability.

2. Is the program open to all skill levels?
No. The program is designed for developmental hockey, ranging from beginners to players at a C-league level. If you are an experienced player, such as a former professional or someone who recently played hockey at the college level, other leagues or programs may be a better fit for your skill level.

3. What is the format of the sessions?
Our sessions are scrimmage-style games played within the program. Players are divided into "light" and "dark" teams each week, and teams change session by session. Scores are not kept unless it’s for a special event or tournament. The focus is on skill-building and having fun.

Registration and Fees

4. How do I register for the program?
Registration opens before each session (Fall, Winter/Spring, and Summer). Links and instructions will be posted on the program’s website and shared with participants. You must register online and pay the required fees to secure your spot.

5. Do I need a USA Hockey membership to participate?
Yes. All players must have a current USA Hockey membership. This membership provides insurance and supports national hockey programs. You will need your USA Hockey number during registration. Visit USA Hockey’s membership page to sign up or retrieve your number.

6. What does it cost to participate?
Costs vary by session. Discounts may be available for registering for multiple sessions in a season. Specific fees will be outlined during registration.

7. Are there refunds if I can’t complete the session?
Refunds are not available if you drop out partway through a session. The program fees are based on anticipated registration numbers, and all funds go toward ice time and program expenses.

Scheduling and Sessions

8. When do sessions take place?
The program runs three sessions per year:

  • Fall (September–December): Four sessions per week.
  • Winter/Spring (January–May): Four sessions per week.
  • Summer (June–August): A condensed format with two sessions per week.

Exact times and dates are provided during registration and are also available on the website.

9. Can I attend sessions I’m not registered for?
No, participants are only allowed to skate during the sessions they are registered for. Skating during unregistered sessions violates USA Hockey insurance rules and disrupts the balance of teams.

Skill Levels

10. How do I know which session to sign up for?
Participants are assessed and placed in one of three levels:

  • Novice: For complete beginners and those new to hockey.
  • Bronze: For advanced beginners with foundational skills who are ready for a moderate pace.
  • Silver: For intermediate players seeking a higher-paced session to further develop their skills and fitness.

If you’re unsure which level is right for you, our ambassadors and program leaders can help guide you.

11. What if my skill level changes?
As your skills improve, you’re encouraged to challenge yourself by moving to a higher-level session. Talk to an ambassador or program leader to discuss switching levels if appropriate.

Gear and Equipment

12. What equipment do I need?
All players must have full hockey gear, including a helmet, gloves, shoulder pads, elbow pads, shin guards, hockey pants, skates, stick, and a jersey (light and dark). No gray jerseys, please! A jersey order is typically organized during registration.

13. What if I’ve never skated in full gear?
We recommend attending a Stick & Puck session at the Weber County Ice Sheet to get comfortable skating with your gear on before joining the program.

14. Where should I get gear from?
We recommend the following places to purchase new or used hockey gear:

  • Local Stores:
    • Hockeystopz in Ogden for local expertise and great service.
    • Pure Hockey in Murray for a wide selection of equipment.
  • Online and Used Gear:
    • Websites like KSL Classifieds, Sideline Swap, and Facebook Marketplace are great resources for finding used equipment at lower prices.

  • Follow USA Hockey rules.

Gear Maintenance

  • Keep It Dry: Air out your equipment after each session to prevent odor and bacteria buildup.
  • Sharpen Your Skates: Regular skate sharpening is essential for performance and control on the ice.
  • Inspect for Damage: Check your gear regularly for wear and tear, especially your helmet, skates, and stick.
